Control Panel Applets and Shortcuts

We can open the Control Panel by clicking Start --> Control Panel. If it's not on your Start Menu, it's easy to add:
  1. Right-click the Start button and choose --> Properties.
  2. On the Start Menu tab, make sure the first (non-classic) Start Menu option is selected and click --> Customize.
  3. Click --> Advanced tab.
  4. In the Start Menu Items list under the Control Panel section, select either Display As Link or Display As Menu. The former (the default) simply displays a Control Panel option on the Start Menu; the latter displays the Control Panel option with a cascading menu providing direct access to each Control Panel applet.
  5. Click OK twice to exit.

Note: If want to see the Control Panel in My Computer? You can add it via the Folder Options dialog (open any folder, choose Folder Options from the Tools Menu, click the View tab and select the option).

Below is the Common Control Panel applets direct call to the specific Control Panel.

Common Control Panel applets

Accessibility Options access.cpl
Add New Hardware hdwwiz.cpl
Add/Remove Programs appwiz.cpl
Date/Time Properties timedate.cpl
Display Properties desk.cpl
FindFast findfast.cpl
Fonts Folder control fonts
Folder Properties control folder
Internet Properties inetcpl.cpl
Joystick Properties joy.cpl
Keyboard Properties main.cpl keyboard
Modem Properties control modem.cpl
Mouse Properties main.cpl
Multimedia Properties mmsys.cpl
Network Properties ncpa.cpl
Power Management control powercfg.cpl
Printers Folder control printers
Regional Settings intl.cpl
Scanners and Cameras control sticpl.cpl
Sound Properties mmsys.cpl sounds
System Properties sysdm.cpl
User Setting nusrmgr.cpl

For example, to open Internet Properties dialog you click Start --> Run, type: inetcpl.cpl

and click OK.

How, then, do you gain access to a specific tab in that dialog box? You use an extended form of the Control command:

control applet.cpl,@applet_number,tab_number

The applet_number is rarely required. There are a couple of cpl files which give access to multiple applets and in those cases you use the applet_number to identify which one you're calling. For example, main.cpl provides access to both the Mouse and the Keyboard properties. The numbering starts at 0, so control main.cpl,@0 opens the Mouse Properties, control main.cpl,@1 opens the Keyboard Properties. If you don't include an applet_number, @0 is assumed.

The tab_number is the number of the tab you want selected in the dialog box, with numbering starting from 0 from the left.

If you want to use a tab_number but want to omit the applet_number (or leave its value at 0), insert an extra comma before the tab_number to indicate the missing value. Thus:

control main.cpl,,3

opens the Mouse Properties dialog to its fourth tab.

So to open the Sounds and Audio Device Properties dialog with the Sounds tab already selected, click Start --> Run and enter the command:

control mmsys.cpl,,1

Create a shortcuts

Create a desktop shortcut for your want and then stick them in the Quick Launch bar or wherever else you want.

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose New --> Shortcut.
  2. Type the appropriate command in the Create Shortcut dialog and click Next. For example:
control appwiz.cpl,,1 (this will open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog with the Add New Programs section selected).
  3. Type a name for this shortcut, such as Add New Programs, and click Finish.

Download Firefox 3 And Tips

You can download Firefox 3 from here.

Firefox 3 Tips & Tricks :

About Add-ons

The standard version of Firefox is full of features, of course, but why stop there? There are more than 5,000 Add-ons — little extras that customize Firefox — that you can download to enhance almost any task you can think of.

Go to Tools → Add-ons to open the Add-ons Manager and discover all the ways you can make Firefox your own.

Manage Your Downloads

If you’re a frequent downloader, you can use the download manager window to keep track of all your downloads. You can pause and resume downloads, and save yourself time by opening files directly from the manager.

If you need to track down a past download, go to Tools → Downloads and use the search box to find your file. Once you’ve found it, double-click on the file to open it, or right-click and choose "Copy Download Link".

Eliminate Every Trace

For security and privacy reasons, it's not good to leave a trail behind you as you browse (especially if you’re using a shared computer). Firefox lets you erase your browsing and download history, clear your cache and delete your cookies in a single click. Just go to Tools → Clear Private Data… to make it happen. Or, to be extra careful, go to Tools → Options → Privacy and select the "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" option.

Note : For more Tips of Firefox 3 can see at : http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/tips

How To Protecting Your Privacy Online

Your computer needs to protections to secure and protect your privacy. A recent study on Internet security sponsored by America Online and the National Security Alliance found that while most people thought their computers were secure upwards of 80% contained monitoring software known as "Spyware." Spyware allows companies to download information from your computer without you even knowing it, This is method to protecting your privacy online .

  1. Use a Spyware removal program. Ad-Aware from Lavasoft is free for personal use. Suggestion: http://www.lavasoft.de/
  2. Use a Personal Firewall. In addition to using an Anti-Virus program, a personal firewall is mandatory as it will block unwanted connection attempts. Sygate's Personal Firewall is a good firewall and it's free for personal use. http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm2
  3. Change to a More Secure Internet Browser. An excellent free alternative is "Firefox" from Mozilla. Not only is it more secure, you get a built-in pop-up blocker and Google search tool: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
  4. Never provide the personal or financial information to a non-secure website. A "secure" website is indicated by "HTTPS" in the address bar, and a small padlock icon in the lower right-hand corner of your browser window: http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html is a free place to check your browser's security.
  5. Never provide confidential - financial information in response to an email request. Legitimate companies will never ask for personal or financial information over an insecure medium like email. Attempts to trick people into revealing personal and financial information through impersonated email messages is known as "Phishing." Some of these messages look very official and may come what appears to be a bona fide bank or company. Beware!. Phishing email messages may be reported to http://www.antiphishing.org/

Screen Recording Software

Free software, called Debut, that is a complete video recording and capturing software.

Debut is a very simple and easy to use program that allows you to capture video directly onto your PC from multiple sources including a webcam, a digital video camera, or from a capture device. It can also record anything on your desktop screen, including playing videos.

The cool thing about this software is that you can use it to record anything on your screen or from an external video source. Also, the program has the option to save the video in numerous formats, including AVI, WMV, FLV, ASF, MPG, 3GP, MP4, MOV and more!
So if you want to make a how-to tutorial or instructional video by recording certain procedures on your computer, Debut can do it. If you want to make your videos from your webcam and add captions and effects, Debut can do it. If you want to connect your digital video camera to your computer and record the video to your computer or to a DVD, Debut can do it.
It can also record audio along with video if you are making a instructional video. You can also adjust the resolution and frame rate of the final output video. It even has the option to email the video once the recording is complete.

Other sweet features include the ability to automatically record to two locations at once, such as to your computer and to a backup device. It can also automatically transmit videos over the Internet using FTP.

And if you already have a USB Video Capture Device, Debut will detect it and allow you to record anything that you can connect to the video capture device!

How to Recover Deleted Pictures and Files from Memory Cards

Have you ever accidentally deleted pictures from your cameras’ memory card? Or pressed the “Format” button instead of delete button and wiped your card clean?
Perform a search on Google for “recover photos from memory card”, and you’ll find a ton of programs out there for sale. Most people don’t mind paying to recover some important pictures and that’s why those programs exist.

However, there are also a lot of good open source / freeware apps out there that can usually get the job done. And that’s where the nice people at CONVAR come in - offering a program called PC Inspector Smart Recovery, which can recover lost pictures for free. What’s even better is that it’s extremely easy to use and works well (based on my tests).
PC INSPECTOR Smart Recovery is a 100% free program, which can recover lost data from not only memory sticks, but also for any kind of memory device available nowadays (for the most part). If you’ve deleted any kind of file, you can usually rely on PC INSPECTOR Smart Recovery to recreate and reconstruct the file again, with great accuracy.

PC INSPECTOR Smart Recovery runs on all Win 9x, ME, NT 4.0, XP and Windows™ 2000 systems and supports the following picture formats: .jpg, .amr, .tif, .bmp, .gif, Canon .crw , Fuji .raf , RICOH .raw, Olympus .orf (E-XX), Olympus .orf (C5050), Nokia 3gp, Kodak .dcr, Minolta .mrw, Nikon .nef (D1H/D1X), Nikon .nef (D2H/D2X), Nikon .nef (E5000/E5700), Sigma - Foveon .x3f, mp4, QuickTime .mov (Konica Minolta). Video files in .avi, QuickTime .mov format and audio files in .wav, .dss format can also be recovered.

10 Warning Signs: Are You Infected Spyware?

It’s been estimated that over 60% of all computers have some kind of spyware installed and most of their owners are unaware! If you are tired of your PC running slow and filling your screen with those nasty pop-up then you will want to read the 10 warning signs listed below. Afterwards check out my “action plan” and what you can do to rid yourself of your spyware infestation.

  1. Browser Hijacks - When I used to get a call from a customer saying that their homepage had suddenly changed, without them doing anything, I knew to bring my anti-spyware fighting software. Malicious programmers love to change your browser settings to transfer your homepage to their “client’s” websites.
  2. PC is Crashing - Without warning, your PC starts crashing, freezing or locking up, but you haven’t added any new software or updated anything recently.
  3. Pop-Ups - You open your browser to visit your favorite blog site then “WHAM!” You are suddenly drowning in pop-ups! Your screen is full of brightly colored lures to porn, gambling or gaming websites. You click on the “Close” or the “X” to shut it down…uh, oh something is downloading to your machine!
  4. Strange Favorites - You notice that there is a strange looking icon in your favorites. You click on it out of curiosity. You are caught in a webring of girly webpages…drat it, you’re at work!
  5. Strange Icon on Desktop or in Systray - You know notice a “winking” red light on the bottom-right in your Systray display. It says you have been infected. You hurriedly click on it to see what is wrong. Then a pop-up appears that says it is downloading an “anti-virus killer”…uh, oh.
  6. Strange New Files Appear - You are poking about in your files and you notice that some odd, spyware-killer software has a folder on your hard drive. Where did that one come from?
  7. Strange Emails - While searching for a note you dropped to the boss, you notice that you have lots of strange emails in your “Send” folder. You didn’t send them, especially the ones in a foreign language.
  8. Strange Toolbars - You open up your browser and now you have 3 toolbars instead of just one. What gives? When you try to remove, or change the settings, they keep coming back no matter what you do.
  9. PC runs sluggish or slow - Granted your computer may not be the newest kid on the block but lately it has been moving slower than the Street Dept fixing a pothole. It takes several minutes for it logon and go out on the web. And it takes forever for you do to the simplest things anymore.
  10. Hard Drive is running all the time - You have noticed that your hard drive is running all the time now. Even when nobody is on the machine! You can see the activity light blinking away and you can also hear the drive being accessed. Huh?
Action Plan - What to do next…

Download from the Net or buy a good anti-spyware software package. For free try Ad-Aware or SpyBot’s S&D. Or use SpySweeper if you need an industrial strength cleaner.Scan your hard drive and follow any instructions on removing items.Install a good personal firewall program to slow down pop-ups and other nastiness.

IMPROVE SWAPFILE PERFORMANCE

If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file :

  1. Go to Start --> Run -->Type "msconfig" then ok
  2. Click on the System.ini tab --> Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign
  3. Click on new then in the blank box type "ConservativeSwapfileUsage =1" Click OK
  4. Restart PC

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will ‘feel’. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu :

  1. Go to Start then RunType "Regedit" then click Ok
  2. Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\ Select --> "MenuShowDelay"
  3. Right click and select "Modify"
  4. Reduce the number to around "100" This is the delay time before a menu is opened
  5. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on you decide

MAKE PROGRAMS LOAD FASTER

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn’t load properly just undo the change. For any program :

  1. Right-click on the icon "shortcut" you use to launch the program
  2. Select propertiesIn the 'target' box, add '/prefetch:1' at the end of the line
  3. Click "Ok"
  4. your programs will now load faster.

How to Promote Web Site, Part2

DISABLE SYSTEM SOUNDS

Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds :
  1. Open Control Panel --> Click Sounds and Audio Devices
  2. Check Place volume icon in taskbar --> Click Sounds Tab
  3. Choose “No Sounds” for the Sound Scheme --> Click “No”Click “Apply”Click “OK”

IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

A great new feature in M’zoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on :

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.
  1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
  2. Select the Desktop tab --> In the Background window select None
  3. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

  1. Open Control Panel --> Open Fonts folder
  2. Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\fontbackup) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain

Speed Up Computer (Win XP), Part2

OPTIMIZE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

  1. Right click on My Computer --> select Properties --> Select the Advanced tab
  2. Under Performance choose the Settings button --> Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
  3. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default.

While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.

  1. Download TCP/IP Optimizer --> (www.speedguide.net/files/tcpoptimizer.exe) and
  2. install --> Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
  3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
  4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply
  5. Reboot

RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

download from(MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities.) BootVis will significantly improve boot times

  1. Download and Run
  2. Select Trace
  3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
  4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
  5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
  6. Reboot
  7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete
